Tricoya ExDF™

Tricoya ExDF™ is a product that rarely comes along having the potential to change everything! Imagine a wood based fiberboard panel that carries a 50-year outdoor guarantee to remain dimensionally stable under any exterior environment, retains its strength, has virtually no thickness swell, won’t decay or rot, and is highly termite resistant. Tricoya even has a 25-year guarantee if it comes in contact with soil. Unbelievable you say? Seeing is believing with this game changing product.

The applications are really exciting. Siding and cladding, exterior trim, outdoor furniture & cabinetry, doors & windows, signage – the list goes on and on. Because Tricoya comes in large panel sizes, it can be used as is or can be cut, shaped or fabricated into practically any configuration. And as a composite wood panel, standard wood-working tools are all that’s required. Tricoya is also easy to paint, stain or laminate, opening the window for maximum design freedom.

Tricoya uses proprietary acetylated wood technology and advanced adhesive knowledge to redefine exterior performance for a wood product. The development of Tricoya centered on challenging the most fundamental reason for wood swelling. Using the secrets of Mother Nature, the challenge has been overcome.

Planter Boxes

The development of Tricoya ExDF centered on challenging the most fundamental reason for wood swelling – water absorption by hygroscopic wood fibers due to the presence of hydroxyl groups that help form the building blocks of wood cells. These hydroxyl groups (water loving sites) bind or release water molecules causing wood to swell or shrink, and contribute to the cause for wood decay.

Acetylation is a revolutionary sustainable process which increases the number of naturally occurring hydrophobic (water repellant) acetyl groups in the wood cells using acetic anhydride. On a molecular basis, the process exchanges the hydroxyl groups with acetyl groups preventing water absorption at these sites, thus enhancing the dimensional stability and durability of the wood significantly.

It sounds amazing, but is it safe for the environment? Great question. The acetic anhydride comes from acetic acid – a chemical created by natural fermentation. In fact, in a diluted form, you probably have this chemical in your pantry – commonly called vinegar! This is why Tricoya has that distinctive vinegar smell. Besides using this “natural chemistry” to alter the wood structure, the adhesive used to bind the wood fibers together is a formaldehyde free poly urethane – what we call No Added Formaldehyde (NAF). So the end product is non-toxic and is available as FSC certified. Tricoya waste can be recycled or burned like other waste wood with no issues. These are the type of sustainable features that makes Tricoya a perfect fit for the Trinity Innovations product portfolio.
